TLRC statement
Should the proposed bill be enacted in its original form, it will restrict the display within public school classrooms to solely the flag of the United States and the flag of the state of Tennessee. These flags are considered symbols of unity for all students.
The bill seeks to specifically regulate the exhibition of LGBTQ+ flags and flags that represent ideological or religious preferences. It is premised on the belief that the educational environment should remain neutral, devoid of any symbols that do not directly contribute to the classroom’s fundamental educational objectives.
The legislation posits that inclusivity can be achieved through the shared identity of being Americans and Tennesseans, without exposing children to specific ideas and beliefs that are not universally embraced, under the guise of fostering acceptance.
It’s time to get the political ideologies and activism out of our classrooms.
