TLRC Statement on Bill

Tennessee is a pro-life state and has made large strides in protecting the lives of unborn children in our state.

This bill continues to build upon those protections by creating a criminal penalty for adults who help minors receive an abortion outside of the state of Tennessee. Adults trafficking minors across the state line for an abortion can be charged with a Class C felony. Parents and legal guardians are exempt from this criminal penalty.

Additionally, this bill would give both the biological mother and father of the child a cause of action against any adult found in violation to recover economic and punitive damages.

We affirm that life begins at conception. Consequently, we believe that all life must be protected to the fullest extent of the law. This bill is a step in the right direction in declaring a fundamental right to life.
