21′ SB0769/HB0782 – Johnson/Lamberth (A Governor’s bill)

Bill Description

Textbooks - As enacted, prohibits the state textbook and instructional materials quality commission, state board of education, and public schools from recommending, approving, or using textbooks and instructional materials and supplemental instructional materials created to align exclusively with the common core state standards or that are marketed or otherwise identified as common core textbooks or materials; provides for withholding of funds if teacher or principal intentionally violates prohibition on such textbooks and materials.

TLRC Position

TLRC strongly supports this effort. That said, it is not as straightforward as it may seem. Much of the common core material was just renamed and re-packaged. It is the content that must be examined to determine its suitability for our Tennessee students. Parents must be vigilant in regard to the instructional material to which their children are being exposed and report objectionable material and assignments.

TLRC Observed Process

This bill passed without drama on a purely partisan basis.
