TLRC Statement on Bill

Do not be deceived. For the second year now, Tennesseans have been advocating for the Restoring State Sovereignty Through Nullification Act sponsored by Rep. Bud Hulsey and Sen. Janice Bowling.

But this bill sponsored by Sen. Adam Lowe does very little to accomplish that goal. We see this as an effort to intentionally subvert the work being done by grassroots supporters across the state in pushing back against federal overreach.

This bill pontificates on constitutional authority and a resistance to arbitrary power, but then does absolutely nothing in the way of providing tangible steps to nullifying unconstitutional federal actions. Essentially, it creates yet another committee in the General Assembly for the purpose of “discussing” potential unconstitutional federal overreach. We submit to you that we do not need another committee. We need a bill that creates a process of action against the federal government when necessary.

If this bill passes, they will claim victory on the issue, and then kill HB2795 / SB2775, the bill we DO support which would create the process of a Bill of Nullification in the state of Tennessee.
